From Daily Wage to First Graduate: The Story of Ankit Verma

When Ankit Verma was 14, his father sat him down and said: "Beta, I cannot pay for your school next year. You will have to find work." Ankit did not cry. He quietly went home, picked up his textbooks, and kept studying.

His father, Suresh Verma, is a daily-wage labourer in Sultanpur district. On a good day, he earns Rs 200. The family of five lives in a two-room house. Affording school fees, uniforms, and books for three children was impossible.

The Day Everything Changed

In 2022, Laraware Welfare Foundation launched a merit-cum-need scholarship programme for students from BPL families in Sultanpur and Ayodhya districts. A local schoolteacher who had been watching Ankit for two years nominated him. After a home visit and interview, Ankit was selected.

The scholarship covered his school fees, books, stationery, and a monthly stipend for transport. For the first time, Ankit could focus entirely on studying โ€” without the guilt of costing his family money they did not have.

"When I got the letter, my mother did not believe it at first. She thought there must be a catch. When I explained there was no catch โ€” that it was just help โ€” she cried for a long time." โ€” Ankit Verma

Class 10 Results: District Topper

In 2023, Ankit scored 94.6% in his Class 10 board examinations โ€” the highest in his school and among the top ten in the district. He continued under the scholarship through Class 12, where he scored 91%. He has now been admitted to a B.Sc. (Computer Science) programme in Lucknow โ€” the first person in his entire family to attend college.

What Ankit Wants to Do

"I want to get a stable government job so my parents never worry again. Then I want to come back and teach in my village. There are so many children like me โ€” they just need someone to believe in them and a little help."

The Ripple Effect

Ankit is not just one story. He is proof that removing a financial barrier changes everything. His younger sister is now the top student in her class. His mother has joined a self-help group and started saving for the first time. One scholarship. One family transformed.
